BRELA

Brela is a small tourist place on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. In the fourth century this place has been inhabited by Illyrian tribe Dalmatae, as evidenced by the archeological material that was found at many locations. Name „Brela“ was mentioned for the first time in the work of Byzantine emperor Constantine Porphyrogennetos "De Administrando Imperio" (The Administration of the Empire) around 950 A.D.

Our place has also a long history heritage in tourism, starting back in 1932, in time when the first pension opened its doors for our tourists. That pension was named "Soline", and it was opened by the Czech woman from Prague called Maša Chmelikova. The place is situated in a very attractive area. On the North there is a mountain Biokovo and on the south there is beautiful six kilometers of coast with many natural sandy beaches. The promenade stretches along the whole place between the pine forest and the sea.

One of the most beautiful beaches in Brela is called "Dugi rat" or more preferred name by the locals would be also "Punta Rata" . In the 2004. the world known magazine Forbes included the beach "Dugi rat" in the 10 most beautiful beaches in the world together with Copacabana, St. Tropez and Costa de Sol. The place is well known for its natural phenomenon - the monument of the nature, a big rock that the ancient earthquake rolled into the sea. On that rock the few pine trees continued to grow and nowadays it looks like a small island. A vast cave on a cliff above, not far away from the stone marks the place from which the stone went on his journey to the sea.

There is a lot of natural heritage which can be seen in this small place, like a place called Vruja, where a spring water emerges from the seafloor all the way to the surface. There is also a mountain Biokovo with its many interesting caves, big botanical garden and variety of plant life and animal species. In this place we can find a lot of "hidden" monuments of cultural and artistc value, like the old graves from the time of the Ottoman Empire or the old French road on the mountain. There is also many profan and sacral objects, like a gotich church of St. Nicolas built in 14th century, Church "Our Lady of Health" from 18th century and little chapel of St. Roko.

Mainly because of its original natural and cultural heritage, good and delicious food, clear and clean sea with beautiful beaches and forests beside them and very friendly local people, over time Brela became one of the most popular tourist destination in Croatia.
